Blacktown Drink Driving A 21-year-old Blacktown man will face court next month charged with recklessly driving, drive with a high-range drink driving and negligent driving.

Use of smart phones

While a car is moving or stationary (however not parked), a motorist could just make use of a smart phone to make or receive a phone call or use the audio playing function:

There are instances where a driver may surpass to the LEFT of a long vehicle that is displaying a ‘do not
overtake turning vehicle’ sign, providing it is safe to do so. These are:

• If the vehicle is on a multi-lane road; or
• If the other vehicle is signalling to turn right or making a U-turn from the center of the roadway; or
• If the other automobile is fixed.

A driver may now overtake to the left of a vehicle displaying a ‘do not overtake turning vehicle’ sign, only if it is safe to do so.

Penalty: 2 demerit points and $ 232

Keeping a minimum distance behind long vehicles

This rule applies to a driver of a long vehicle that is not driving in a built up location, a multi-lane roadway or overtaking.

A driver of a long vehicle, while driving behind another long vehicle, must keep at least 60m distance behind the long vehicle ahead.

A driver of a road train, while driving behind another long automobile must keep at least 200m distance behind another long vehicle.

Penalty: $ 397 or $ 1,191 and 3 or 4 demerit points

Utilizing portable warning triangles

If a driver of a heavy vehicle (with a GVM greater than 12t) stops or has a fallen load on a road with a speed limit of 80km/h or more and the vehicle is not visible for 300 metres in all directions, three warning triangles must be placed on the road:

• One triangle must be placed 200-250 metres behind the auto or fallen load;
• One triangle must be placed 200-250 metres in front of the vehicle or fallen load; and
• One triangle must be placed by the side of the vehicle or fallen load.

On a road with a speed limit of under 80km/h and the vehicle is not visible for 200 metres in all directions, three warning triangles must be placed on the road:

• One triangle has to be placed 50-150 metres behind the vehicle or fallen load;
• One triangle must be placed 50-150 metres in front of the vehicle or fallen load; and
• One triangle must be placed by the side of the vehicle or fallen tons.

On a one-way road or divided road, three triangles are still required.

However, instead of putting the triangle in front of the vehicle, this triangle should be put between the vehicle or fallen load, and the triangle behind the vehicle.

Harbourside LAC Police responded to a complaint that a white Toyota Hilux ute was driving erratically but gradually at about 8.30 pm.

Police saw a ute matching the summary near Miller Street and triggered their caution lights for the driver to stop.

When the driver continued north towards Crows Nest at 35km/hr, police gave chase to the intersection of Crows Nest Rd

. The motorist, a 38-year-old guy from Oakville, allegedly returned a positive roadside breath test. He was apprehended and taken to North Sydney Police headquarters where he produced a reading of 0.222.

The man was charged with drive with high-range PCA. His licence was suspended on the spot.

Traffic and Highway Patrol Commander, Acting Assistant Commissioner Stuart Smith, said he was horrified that only hours after Operation Stagnation ended, motorists were still being charged with high-range drink driving offences.

“Anyone driving with a high-range PCA could precipitate a crash; the fact that a drunk driver is traveling at low speed does not make it acceptable, defendable or any less dangerous,” Assistant Commissioner Smith said.

“I ‘d also like to thank the members of the public who reported last night’s incident to authorities,” Assistant Commissioner said.

The man is due to appear in North Sydney Local Court on Wednesday, 24 October.
